Ersatz Auctions has been instructed to auction without reserve the remaining holdings of the now defunct Witness Instrument & Survey Enterprises  (WISE). Founded by the eccentric surveyor and inventor Clara T. Witness, shortly after the First World War, WISE provided first-rate surveying and cartographic services in remote locations.

WISE endured for over twenty-five years with an unusual all-female crew of surveyors specializing in redrawing ‘official’ boundaries.  Upon the unfortunate death of Clara T. Witness in a climbing incident in 1946, WISE ceased operations, liquidating the majority of their instruments with the exception of this small collection held by Clara’s son Frank Witness. Recently inherited by granddaughter Faye Witness, many of the fine instruments for auction are unique; invented and patented by Clara T. herself in response to the limitations of conventional measuring devices.

A Witness corner is a surveyor’s term for a point on the land that ‘stands in’ when the true corner is unavailable or impractical for mounting markers. Its application relies on the ‘professional judgment’ of the surveyor.

Witness Corner

Representing the instruments and holdings of an imagined survey company,
Witness Corner is an installation standing in for the ‘supposed’ truth of geological science and its methods of measure. It envisions the footprint of our land if artists functioned as surveyors. Employing a fictional premise, the installation Witness Corner explores the boundary chaos resulting from this contradiction of art and measure.

Entering the exhibition space...
Spectators encounter an installation resembling a Public Auction Preview complete with lot numbers and catalogue. Installation items reference operations of the fictional Witness Instrument and Survey Enterprises (WISE) and its imaginary founder Clara T. Witness.
